Introduction / History

The Gende are an indigenous people living in the Bismarck Mountains of southern Madang Province in Papua New Guinea. Their language, Gende, belongs to the Trans–New Guinea language family and is the primary language of the community. Historically the Gende lived in small clan-based hamlets and experienced periods of tribal fighting that largely ceased in the early twentieth century. Villages today remain organized around extended kin groups and traditional territories.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life centers on subsistence gardening in mountainous terrain. Families cultivate sweet potatoes, taro, bananas, and sugarcane, and they gather wild plants and hunt forest animals. Men usually clear forest, hunt, and build houses, while women tend gardens, raise pigs, cook, and care for children. Villages consist of clusters of houses connected by family ties, and households often maintain small huts near their gardens. Celebrations include communal feasts and cultural dance gatherings similar to regional sing-sing festivals where music, body paint, and feathers are displayed.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Gende identify with Christianity, reflecting decades of missionary activity in the highlands. However, elements of traditional belief remain influential, including respect for ancestral spirits and concern about unseen spiritual forces affecting health and daily life. Christianity is often practiced alongside customary ideas about spirits and clan traditions.

What Are Their Needs?

Many villages remain remote, limiting access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. Continued discipleship and strong local churches would help believers grow in biblical understanding and leadership. Greater access to Scripture resources and pastoral training could strengthen Christian maturity and outreach in surrounding areas. Improved infrastructure, medical care, and sustainable agriculture could also enhance physical well-being in isolated mountain communities.

Prayer Items

Pray for strong biblical teaching among Gende believers and for mature leaders to guide churches.
Pray that the gospel would transform remaining fears of spirits and traditional practices.
Pray for workers who will disciple families and encourage missions vision among local Christians.
Pray for improved healthcare, education, and transportation so remote communities can flourish physically and spiritually.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, discipleship materials, and evangelism resources in the Gende language.
